In the Beginning

The newly formed Grafton Historical Society is arising out of the ashes of the past. Capturing the past (and present) history of Grafton Wisconsin is our ambition. With this goal, we hope to be a resource for residents, scholars, journalists and other historians so that all can learn from the past.

We were fortunate that Anthropologist Sarah Smith of Port Washington Historical Society alerted us to the discovery of “buried treasure” on the west bank of the Milwaukee River just north of Highway 60 in Veterans Park. It was found during the construction of the River Walk extension in Veterans Park. Sarah led activities at “the dig” and guided us in collecting and sorting items. What a great start to our archives!

History has changed. Yes, our collections will include the physical items (photos, clippings, letters, documents) but in the world of today, they will also include digital photos, digital scans, web addresses, and emails. When cataloged and searched for retrieval, these will be much of the basis for historical documents in the present age.
